Google Unveils Nexus 7 Android Tablet

Today, 27th of June, during Google's keynote at Google I/O 2012, the company announced a new Asus-branded tablet called the Nexus 7.

Nexus 7 will be available today on the Google Play store starting at $200 (thats roughly between 35k to 45k in naira)for the 8GB storage configuration, with units shipping in mid-July. Purchasing on Google Play also gifts you a $25 credit to spend on Google Play media.

The Nexus 7 sports a 7-inch, IPS (in-plane switching) screen, with a resolution of 1,280x800 pixels. The tablet is also the first 7-incher to house a 1.3GHz Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core CPU, which includes a 12-core GPU.

Rounding out the specs is a Micro-USB port, 1GB of RAM, a 1.2-megapixel front camera (no back camera included), a gyroscope, GPS, accelerometer, microphone, and 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi.

The device measures 10.45mm thick, weighs 0.7 pound, and, from the looks of the first pictures released, has a textured, grippy backside and looks to be about the same size as the Kindle Fire.

The Nexus 7 will be the first device to run the latest version of the Android 4.1 OS, also known as Jelly Bean. Google says to expect 9 hours of 720p HD video battery life.

Google announces Android Jelly Bean

Google today announced its own tablet at Google I/O, the company's annual event for developers in San Fransisco. TOI had reported on June 26 that Google would enter the tablet market on June 27.
Google announces Android Jelly Bean

Apart from competing with Apple's iPad, which has the highest market share in the tablet market, with its tablet Google is also aiming to take down Amazon's Kindle Fire, a 7-inch tablet that runs on Android but doesn't use several Google services like other Android devices do.

The tablet, named Nexus 7, has a 7-inch screen with a resolution of 1280x800 pixels. It is powered by quad-core Tegra 3 processor with 12 core GPU and has 1GB RAM.

The tablet runs on Jelly Bean, the latest version of Android operating software which was also announced at the I/O event. Nexus 7 is made by Asus. It has a 4,325mAh battery. The tablet has a 1.2MP front camera and weighs 340 grams. The device supports wi-fi but not 3G, something that may limit its appeal to users who like to carry their tablet everywhere.

Nexus 7 will cost $199 in the US. This looks like the price for 8GB model with 16GB likely to cost a bit more. The tablet can be preordered today by people in the US, Canada, Australia and UK. The device will ship out to customers in mid-July. At the moment there is no information on the availability of the tablet in India.

While Android tablets are selling in the market for the last one year, they have failed find buyers and dent the iPad market. Also, Amazon launched Kindle Fire last year and sold more tablets in a few months than what Google's hardware partners had managed in a year. The irony is that Fire is powered by Android, Google's operating software, but Amazon has heavily modified it. This means Fire doesn't come with the Google services pre-installed. This affects Google's ability to make money from Fire even though it uses Android.

"Google believes it has given its partners ample time to innovate and compete but they have been unsuccessful versus the iPad," said Patrick Moorhead, president at Moor Insights & Strategy, firm that advices several computer hardware companies.

With its new tablet, Google hopes to provide a clear direction to its hardware partners the way it does in the case of smartphones with Nexus devices. It also hopes that by entering the fray, it can motivate developers to write more tablet-specific apps for Android.

Google tablet confirmed by Asus

Google has launched its first tablet computer, marking the opening skirmishes in its battle with Apple’s popular iPad.
The co-branded, $199, device, to be released in San Francisco at Google’s I/O conference, is likely to compete with the Kindle Fire, which also retails for $199 in America.
Gartner research suggests the tablet market may grow to nearly 120million units this year.
Amazon uses the Kindle Fire to encourage users to buy books, music and video, while existing Google tablets have tried to challenge the iPad.
An Asus executive told Reuters the new tablet was building on the success of cheaper devices. “It's targeting Amazon. The Kindle is based on Google's platform but with its own service, so Google has to launch its own service, too," said the executive.
Google has its own store for apps called Google Play, but does not have anything like Amazon's service. The new tablet is expected to run Jelly Bean, an update to the Android operating system that is only expected to make minor changes.
Bloomberg earlier reported that Google would launch a tablet at its developer conference this week, taking direct aim at Apple Inc's iPad, citing two people familiar with the matter. One of the sources said the 7-inch tablet would showcase new features of Android.
Price, specifications or launch timetable have not yet been confirmed. Google declined to comment.
Apple's iPad had a 68 per cent share of the market in January-March, according to data from IDC. Amazon had a little over 4 per cent, lagging Samsung Electronics and Lenovo. Microsoft last week introduced its own line of tablet computers, marking a major strategic shift for the software giant as it struggles to compete with Apple and re-invent its aging Windows franchise.
Google has previously worked with hardware manufacturers HTC and Samsung to produce co-branded Android mobile phones under the Nexus brand. This would be its first such tablet device.
Commentators remained sceptical about Google’s chances, however. “When you look at the tablet market, you have iPad - and others,” said Rhoda Alexander, an analyst at industry researcher IHS iSuppli. “Everybody is trying to figure out how to compete against the iPad. And I just see it as just one more experiment going down that road.”
Gartner expects the iPad to remain the global tablet leader until at least 2016, even as it loses some market share. The iPad will account for an estimated 46 per cent of shipments in 2016, down from a projected 61 per cent this year. Android may have 37 per cent by 2016, a gain from 32 per cent. Microsoft, which had zero per cent of the tablet market last year, is expected to capture 12 per cent by 2016.
At last year's conference Google's announcements included Google Music, its streaming music service, the Ice Cream Sandwich update to Android and Chromebooks - Google's range of laptop computers running its Chrome operating system.
However, products announced at Google I/O have not always been hits. The 2009 conference saw the debut of Google Wave, a collaboration tool that the search company eventually closed earlier this year.
A year later the company unveiled Google TV, its apps driven television platform. Google TV has struggled in the US, where the interface has undergone several redesigns. A Sony-branded Google TV set-top box will launch in Britain next month.

Google's top seven contributions to the Internet

Google began as a humble research project by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, in March 1996, as students of Stanford University. While probing through the mathematical structure of the internet and also looking at the possibilities that their research could unearth, both Larry and Sergey knew that they were sitting on something big, something that could contribute heavily to the internet. This humble start to "Google" has now blossomed into the biggest online network of websites, applications and tools.
Google has contributed a lot to the internet, let us have a look at some of the most important contributions:
One of the first Google sites and also the most used one, Google Search has become the largest share holder in the Search Engine Market (as shown in infographic). Google Search boasts of having one of the most complex and well laid out algorithms that can detect and rank content from different websites using certain parameters, including Google Page Rank (another contribution to the internet, used to rank the quality of a site with the help of number of incoming links or "votes" as they call it at Google). Google Search prides itself on delivering "The Most Relevant Search Results".
2) GMail
The GMail service was started in 2004 in a Beta phase and was made open to the public in 2007, the free e-mail hosting service has since become one of the most popular e-mail services with over 350 million users (as per January 2012). Yahoo! Mail is a close second with around 320 million registered users.
GMail has surely changed the world of e-mail mainly because of its easy integration with many of the other Google tools and sites such as Google Play, YouTube, Blogger etc.
Although YouTube was originally started by PayPal employees in 2005, it was popularized, developed and integrated with other online tools by Google in 2006. Google had to pay a whopping $1.65 billion to acquire the video sharing site.
At the time Google bought YouTube, around 100 million videos were being viewed each day, which increased to 4 billion video views a day by 2012.
4) Adsense
Google Adsense was the one of the first PPC (pay-per-click) programs to be successful on the internet and made "Making Money Online" something that everyone could achieve. Adsense was started in June 2003 and now accounts for over 28% of Google's total revenue.
Adsense created a new generation of bloggers and webmasters who finally had a reason to open a website or a blog, and today, we have millions of websites and webmasters looking to profit from this venture by Google.
The days before AdWords was one in which advertisers had to contact several different sites directly and have their ads placed on the sites. Post AdWords, advertisers could just choose a "Niche" or "Keywords" for which their ads need to be served, with this simple task, advertisers could see their ads running on targeted sites without the hassle of directly contacting many different webmasters.
Even today, millions of advertisers are finding potential customers online through AdWords.
Blogger was launched in 1999 by Pyra Labs, but was bought by Google in 2003. Ever since Google bought Blogger, there have been rapid changes, improvements and various types of integration added to Blogger, which has made it the most popular free blogging platform today.
The simple fact that people who want to blog need not pay any money for a domain name or a hosting account has made it very popular indeed.
"Every minute of every day, 270,000 words are written on Blogger", a statement posted on the Google Blog shows the popularity and extent of usage of Blogger.
Google Maps for the first time, provided a way to search for and locate anything in the world using localized maps. With recent developments, one can easily locate any service in their locality and even get reviews and thumbnails of the service (such as a restaurant, mall, shopping complex).

Google detects nearly 9,500 malicious websites every day

Google detects nearly 9,500 malicious websites every dayWhile providing a detailed report on its anti-malware intiatives, Google recently revealed that it identifies nearly 9,500 new malicious sites every day. Google further says it provides millions of malware-related warnings to Internet users daily.
Niels Provos from Google's security team said in a blog post that the Internet company finds nearly 9,500 new malicious websites every day, which includes sites that have been victims of cyber attacks or the ones that have been specially developed to spread malware or for phishing.
"Our detection techniques are highly accurate—we have had only a handful of false positives,” he wrote.
Google says about 600 million users of various browsers – Chrome, Firefox and Safari – see million malware/phishing warnings per day for sites they are about to visit. "When we detect malware or phishing, we trigger a red warning screen that discourages clicking through to the website. Our free and public Safe Browsing API allows other organizations to keep their users safe by using the data we've compiled,” Provos wrote.
Google's detailed report commemorates the fifth anniversary of its Safe Browsing feature, which ensures malware and phishing are kept at bay. Google's Safe Browsing also aims to educate website owners on ways to make their websites secure.
Google discovers that e-commerce websites mostly suffer from phishing attacks, as most of the phishers are “motivated by money”. Provos adds phishers are geographically dispersed and to avoid detection they stay online for less than an hour. Malware developers, on the other hand, attempt to take control over other websites.

Google Music was officially launched

Google Music, the online service for the music enthusiasts exceeded the beta stage and is now available to the public, but only in the United States.
The access to Google Music Store it is provided for the phone users and Android tablets, to begin the web version of Google Music, and later a new version of the interface of mobile applications, which can be installed from the Android Market.
Google Music Store offers you a collection of 13 million original songs, which can contribute with new additions such big production houses and independent artists uploading their own songs.
Besides an impressive number of songs and albums available for a fee, Google Music Store offers free songs that can be downloaded only after I associate with Google Checkout credit card issued in the United States.
An interesting feature, for the Google+ users, allows the distribution of songs or albums purchased by friends from your contact list, they have the possibility to listen to music freely available, it is true only once. Unfortunately, those outside the select circle of friends can listen to clips from the distributed songs.
Google Music can store your entire collection of songs purchased online or charged, and now offers the ability to download files to PC. Unfortunately there are some limitations, the web interface allowing up downloading a song twice. To download all songs purchased from Google Music will have to use the Music Manager.

Histroy of Google

Google home pageOriginally known as BackRub, Google is a search engine that started development in 1996 by Sergey Brin and Larry Page as a research project at Stanford University. BSNL Unlimited Plans and Speed

http://telecomtalk.info/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/bsnl-broadband.pngBSNL is a government company. It was derived from the telecom department of India. Alike all government departments, BSNL too has retrieved the bad work culture of government. If you want it to get it done by BSNL you need to put a lot of effort into it. It may or may not occur at the desired time. Much of depends on luck and the person in charge. There are rare personalities in BSNL who know how to do their work. But all may not be lucky enough to meet him. One of the main advantages of Unlimited plans is the peace of mind it gives to the user. If take a 100 people who is using unlimited plans 90 of the choose it because of fear of errenous bill.

When I was writing this I could hardly find a reason that is the demerit of this plan. If you are in unlimited plan, you definitely have a low speed but you get more time to seed. The speed will be 20 - 25 or 50 - 55 KBps. But you have 24 hours to seed and maintain a good ratio.

Normally people confuse themselves with download. Those who just browse think that they are not downloading anything and is safe from billing errors. If you browse for one hour, it will cost you around 20 MB. And the bandwidth is calculated as upload + download. In unlimited plan , you can download and upload as much as you can. Hence it is a boon for heavy browser.

It doesn't mean that we cannot download in Unlimited plans. I too have UL 750, the slowest of UL plans and even then I am able to download movie. Only thing you need is patience. Just give it some time and everything will be right. Various unlimited plans are

UL 750

Speed - 256 Kbps

Telephone rent - Yes

UL 750+

Speed - 256 Kbps

Telephone rent - No

UL 1350

3 Indians among 15 finalists in Google Science Fair

Bangalore: Two students from the city, one from Lucknow and an Indian origin American are among the 15 finalists in this year’s Google Science Fair, the global science competition that challenges the young minds to conduct experiments that they think can change the world.

16-year old Rohit Fenn and Raghavendra Ramachandran (17) qualified for the final round from Bangalore, while Sumit Singh (14) has made it from Lucknow, Google India Head (Products) Lalitesh Katragadda told reporters here.

Another finalist is 17-year old Yamini Naidu, an Indian origin American, he said.

The three Indian students will fly along with 12 other finalists to Google’s headquarters in California in July to present their projects to the panel of judges and compete for prizes that include USD 100,000 in scholarship funds, a trip to the Galapagos Islands and more, Katragadda said.

Rohit's qualifying science project is a partial-vacuum assisted flush that conserves over 50 percent of the overall water used in a toilet to flush, he said.

Raghavendra Ramachandran, also from Bangalore, won a place in the final 15 with a project that involves re-converting the partially oxidized fuel (alcohols) into usable fuel, he added.

Sumit Singh, from Lucknow, designed a low-cost Vertical Multi-Level Farm, which could be used by small farmers to increase crop yield in agriculture and horticulture, he said.

Yamini’s project is about creating a homology model of a human receptor protein using a computer modelling programme, he said.

Google, author body end spat on internet books

PARIS (Reuters) - U.S. internet search provider Google and authors group Society Men of Letters of France (SGDL) have reached an agreement that ends a dispute dating back to 2006 over the publishing of snippets of books on the internet.

The deal puts an end to an appeal procedure, the two groups wrote in a joint statement on Monday.

"The agreement was reached to promote initiatives in favour of digital books' development and create diversity, in compliance with copyrights," they said.

The SGDL, which says it represents 6,000 French and French speaking authors and pays special attention to copyrights with regard to new technological developments, said the agreement would protect their rights on the internet.

How to make Gmail your default email program in Windows

Gmail logoOne of the annoying things for people to try and figure out is how to make Gmail your default email account when clicking on mailto: links on web sites. By default, Windows will automatically try to open your Outlook account. This can be very annoying to a lot of people as the average user will have a web based email client like Gmail/ Hotmail etc instead of a program based one installed on their machines. Therefore if, like me, you click on a mailto: link when trying to contact someone on a site, Windows will try to open Outlook.
In this tutorial I will show you how to make Gmail your default email application in both Windows XP and Windows 7 via a step by step process. This is very simple and hopefully helpful. For both of these tutorials, I am assuming you have either Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7 and a Gmail account already.
First we will deal with Windows XP. Go to the Google tool bar site and download the Gmail Notifier here, then accept the Terms of Service and install it.
Once this is installed you will be greeted with a window in the top left corner of your screen where you will need to input your email address and password as shown below:

Make sure you check the ‘Remember my credentials’ box, so that it won’t keep asking you after every time you start your computer. Then click ‘OK’ and you will notice that a blue envelope icon (note: This will be white when there are no email unread) now appears in your task bar to the left of your clock. Now right click on the Notifier Icon and select ‘Options’

The options window will enable you to make Gmail the default email for your mailto: links in multiple browsers including Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer. For me personally Chrome is my main browser, so I would select Chrome and then ‘OK’

You can check to see if you have done it correctly, but clicking on the mailto: link here.
That’s it you’re done!
Next we will look at how to do this in Windows 7 using another program called Gmail Notifier for Windows 7 which you can download here.
Once you have installed the program you will see the following window where you get to select you language:

Once you have clicked on your language preference it will then show you the next window where you will need to input your email address and password

Once you have done that and clicked ‘OK’ you will notice the program icon (displayed as a red envelope) to the left of your clock in the task bar. Now to enable Gmail to be your default mailto: you have to go to the program options by right clicking on the envelope icon in the task bar and selecting ‘Preferences’

You straight away notice that this program has a lot more options that the Gmail Notifier for XP does. First select the ‘Use Gmail for Mail To Links’ which will set the program to automatically open your Gmail account when you click on a email link on any website.
There are a few other options that I personally like to disable as I find then distracting. These are the ‘Sound Alert’ and ‘Tray Icon Blink’ options. If however you want to have a sound alert (the default one is a lady’s voice saying ‘Incoming Message’) you can select your own by clicking the ‘Select Sound File’ button at the bottom of the preferences screen and pointing to a sound file you have. Here is a great selection of free to download and use sound files that will work for you. They range from famous lines in films to sound effects. The program can only use .wav files (not mp3) so make sure you download the correct filetype. Again, if you want to test to see of you have done this correctly, you can test it by clicking on this mailto: link.
